Terence Garvin Fighting for Spot with Steelers

LANDOVER, Md. -

Terence Garvin is fighting for a position on the Pittsburgh Steelers' 53-man roster and the latest opportunity to showcase what he's capable of came against Washington on Monday night.

The former West Virginia University defender is learning the ins and outs of playing linebacker for Pittsburgh and with the help of some veterans around him, he believes he is making real progress.

"Just a lot of little stuff about playing linebacker and a lot of technique stuff," Garvin said of what older players have taught him. "Of course, trying to learn the playbook, they're always there for you. They taught me a lot of stuff when it comes to blitzing. The whole position, really, they've been there for me. The mentality, it's a lot like we were at West Virginia, a hardnosed, come at you mentality."

Garvin is in the middle of a months-long job interview and he knows that every play in football could be his last, so he approaches each practice and preseason game rep as though it is. He doesn't allow himself to look ahead to the impending cuts each team must make in order to dwindle its roster or concern himself with whether or not he makes Pittsburgh's practice squad.

"You really just have to come out here and play every day. You can't really think about what you can't control," said Garvin.

Less than a year removed from being one of the cornerstones of WVU's defense, Garvin continues to keep tabs on his old team.

"[WVU safety Darwin] Cook, that's my man. He tells me he's excited about [the season]," said Garvin. "He said they've been looking good, they've been practicing well, so I'm excited to see what they've got. They're got some new people up there, so if people just step up, they'll be straight."
