WVU Releases Preseason Football Depth Chart

West Virginia released its preseason depth chart late Sunday evening, revealing what appears to be the current plan for all three sides of the ball.

The most publicized race of the offseason was at the quarterback position and the depth chart lists Paul Millard ahead of Clint Trickett, with the word "Or" between the two names. All that reveals at the position is that redshirt freshman Ford Childress has fallen to No. 3.

Millard has the most experience with WVU, having appeared in 12 games playing behind starter Geno Smith the past two seasons.

Speaking of experience, there is very little on this offense, at least as far as what they have done at WVU. Of 19 players listed offensively, 14 have zero starts for the Mountaineers and 10 have zero games played at West Virginia. Starting left guard Marquis Lucas has one game played. Veteran Pat Eger is listed below Lucas with an "or" between their names as well.

Junior running back Andrew Buie's name is not listed on the depth chart, with Houston transfer Charles Sims getting the top spot there. Behind Sims is true freshman Wendell Smallwood, junior college transfer Dreamius Smith and junior Dustin Garrison.

Along the offensive line, left to right, are Quinton Spain, Lucas or Eger, Tyler Orlosky, Mark Glowinski and Curtis Feigt. Behind those starters are Nick Kindler, the other of Lucas or Eger, Tony Matteo, Russell Haughton-James and Marcell Lazard.

The outside receivers are Ivan McCartney and K.J. Myers as starters with Ronald Carswell and Kevin White as their primary back-ups. Only one inside receiver position is listed, with Daikiel Shorts and Devonte Mathis taking that role. An H-Back is listed on the depth chart, that job belonging to Cody Clay and Garrett hope.

On defense, Brandon Golson is the only starter listed who hasn't previously started a game at WVU. Golson gets the call for the Buck linebacker position.

The front three will be Will Clarke at defensive tackle, Shaq Rowell at nose tackle and Eric Kinsey handling defensive end. Behind those starters are Noble Nwachukwu or Kyle Rose, Christian Brown and Dontrill Hyman or Rose, respectively.

Isaiah Bruce is the top spur linebacker, followed by true freshman Marvin Gross. Jared Barber and Doug Rigg are both listed as the starting Sam linebacker with Sean Walters up next and Will linebacker is Nick Kwiatkoski, backed by Tyler Anderson.

Dozie Ezemma falls behind Golson at Buck.

Free safety features Karl Joseph, then K.J. Dillon, with Darwin Cook and Ricky Rumph handling the top two spots at bandit safety. The starting cornerbacks are Travis Bell at boundary and Ishmael Banks at field, backed by freshman Darryl Worley. Behind Bell are Avery Williams "or" Brodrick Jenkins.

As for special teams, Charles Sims again appears as the kick returner along with Wendell Smallwood. On punt return are Ronald Carswell and Jordan Thompson. Josh Lambert is kicking, Nick O'Toole is punting, Michael Molinari is holding and John DePalma gets it all started at long snapper.

This depth chart is just the first, and is subject to widespread changes. But on the eve of the first game week of the season, this is what the Mountaineers staff decided to release to the public.
