A big question coming into West Virginia University's football season was who will fill the big shoes left behind by Geno Smith? A quarterback battle has been on going and Coach Dana Holgorsen has yet to name a true starting quarterback.
The three men competing for the starting job are Clint Trickett, Paul Millard, and Ford Childress. It appears Childress is out of the running but it's still unclear if Trickett or Millard will be the starting quarterback. It's even been suggested that both men will share snaps in the team's first game of the season.
What's it like for these young athletes to compete against one another for such an important role? Trickett says it's nothing more than friendly competition.
"I don't really look at it as battling against them, I'm battling against the defense" Trickett said.
Despite a variety of personalities, Trickett claims that three men are friends and get along great even though they've been competing against one another each day.
"We're all pretty different, I'm a mixture between Ford and Paul" Trickett said. "Ford's the funny guy, Paul's more reserved, and I'm probably right in the middle. It's a good combination; we all get along pretty well."
Trickett knows first-hand what it's like to compete against teammates for a starting role, he did just that at Florida State before making his way to WVU. Trickett's become used to competition amongst his peers.
"Competing is competing, you're going to be used to it. It's not like when the coach turns his back you're going to take a hammer to his (Millard's) knee caps." Trickett joked.
However, if we happen to see Millard limping on Saturday, can we suspect Trickett is responsible?
"Yeah, probably…or my mom" Trickett said with a smile.
WVU will host William and Mary on Saturday and all eyes will be on the player under center. The role of starting quarterback is not a position you can take lightly, it'll be very interesting to see who gets the start and just how well they'll perform.
