Buie Withdraws from WVU, Plans January Return

MORGANTOWN -

Junior running back Andrew Buie has withdrawn from West Virginia University just two days after head football coach Dana Holgorsen announced that the rusher would take a redshirt, according to a report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

WVU football sports information director Mike Montoro said Thursday evening that he could not confirm the report, but a source within the program did confirm that Buie had been absent from practice for at least a portion of this first game week of the season.

Prior to his reported departure, Buie had been relegated to the scout team, according to that same source.

On his first weekly radio show of the season, head coach Dana Holgorsen confirmed that Buie had left the team, but said that his plan is to return in January after taking time off from football.

Buie, the Mountaineers' leading rusher in 2012, was expected to compete for playing time this season with a slew of newcomers, including transfers Charles Sims and Dreamius Smith and true freshman Wendell Smallwood. Each of those players, along with junior Dustin Garrison, were listed on WVU's preseason depth chart, but Buie's name was nowhere to be found.

The Mountaineers' next media availability will not be until Saturday, following the team's season opener against William and Mary, which is scheduled for a noon kickoff from Morgantown.
