Ford Childress to Start Against Georgia State

MORGANTOWN -

Redshirt freshman quarterback Ford Childress will get the start for the West Virginia football team against Georgia State, head coach Dana Holgorsen announced Thursday.

"We feel like he's ready," Holgorsen said on his weekly radio show. "His fire is lit, he's sat there on the sidelines, when given the opportunity he's grabbed it and said let's go."

Holgorsen said after WVU's 16-7 loss to Oklahoma last weekend that he intended to open up the quarterback competition again and allow both Childress and junior Clint Trickett to get more reps in practice. Paul Millard, who had started the first two games of the season, was 40-of-66 for 455 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Childress was the only of the three quarterbacks whose name was not listed as a potential starter on the preseason depth chart and his reps were taken away, but Holgorsen said earlier this week while shooting The Dana Holgorsen Show for television that since he cut his reps, Childress had probably performed better than the other two, more veteran options.

"The one area that we're lacking on offense is quarterback play," said Holgorsen. "It's not the quarterback play that I've been used to. I've been blessed with a bunch of good quarterbacks, but in the last 15 years, we've had quarterbacks that not only have been able have the production or go to the NFL, but also will his team to win. We need to find some guys that can will the team to win."

Childress may be that guy or he may not be. Holgorsen wants to know if he is and he will take the first step to finding out the answer to that question by getting him the first snap of the game when the Panthers come to town Saturday at noon.

One thing is for sure, at 6-foot-5, 234 pounds, Childress has the look of a prototype quarterback and passes the eye test in a way neither of his competitors for the position do. His opportunity to show that he is more than just a sizeable body will come in just a few days.
