Police are investigating the death of a student at the University of Charleston Beckley Campus.
Beckley Police said that Sheila Hopkins, 19, of Bluefield, WV was found in her room at Hogan Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Detectives said it is being treated as unexplained death until an autopsy can be completed. There is no word on when that will be. Detectives are looking at surveillance video, but said that the death did not appear to be suspicious.
According to police, Hopkins friends became concerned about her after she had not been seen for nearly two day. She was found in her dorm room when students and coaches went to check on her.
59News contacted UC-Beckley and the following statement was released by the university's President, Dr. Edwin Welch.
"Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of a University of Charleston Beckley student who was found deceased in her room in Hogan Hall today (Jan. 15). This is truly a heartbreaking situation for many people. We are meeting with UC-Beckley students, faculty and staff at this time to help them deal with this tragedy. The University will provide further comment, as appropriate, when more information is available."
Hopkins was a player on the UC-Beckley's Women's Basketball team. She was a freshman at UC-Beckley and has graduated from Bluefield High School. Officials with the school sat down on Wednesday with her Golden Eagle teammates and also the staff and students. The school is working with the family as well.
According to Bluefield High School's girls coach, Tony Mallamaci, there will be a moment of silence to remember Sheila before their home game on Friday night. That will be held at the Brushfork Armory at 7 p.m. There will also be a short commemoration.
