The West Virginia Mountaineers (14-9,6-4) are heading into the Kansas game Saturday on a three game win streak. They are coming off their biggest win of the season over number 21 ranked Oklahoma in overtime here in Morgantown Wednesday night, 91-86.
The Sooners finally made it to the WVU Coliseum Wednesday night about 88 minutes before tip off, and then lost to the Mountaineers in overtime. West Virginia's win over a nationally ranked opponent is the program's first in 16 games, dating back to a 74-62 win here over Georgetown on Jan. 17, 2012. The Mountaineers had been 0-7 against Big 12 top 25 teams since joining the league last season.
The Mountaineers led by 11 points, 43-32, at halftime and by 14 after Eron Harris opened the second half with a 3-pointer. Harris, a 6-3 sophomore, finished 10 of 18 from the field, 6 of 13 from beyond the arc and 2 for 2 at the foul to lead the Mountaineers to their third consecutive win and a share of third place in the Big 12.
"Eron was terrific," Huggins said. "We were going to run something else when we were down by 3 ... we didn't get him as open as we wanted to get him. He made a hard shot. He made a hard, hard shot."
Heading into Saturday's Kansas game, Juwan Staten is first in the Big 12 assists (5.96 apg.), first in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.85), first in minutes played (37.39 mpg.), second in scoring (18.1 ppg.), third in field goal percentage (51.4 percent), tied for third in steals (1.35 spg.) I'm not sure there is a more valuable player to his team in the Big 12 right now than what Juwan Staten is to West Virginia.
Staten is looking to do something no other Mountaineer player has ever done before---including the great Jerry West. Score more then 500 points, grab more then 150 rebounds and have more then 150 assists.
The Kansas Jayhawks are currently sitting at eighth place with a 17-5, 8-1 record. The Jayhawks are coming off a 69-52 win at Baylor on Tuesday and have a 1 game lead on Texas for first in the Big 12. Kansas has won 110 straight games in Allen Field House against non-ranked opponents. Freshman guard Andrew Wiggins leads Kansas with a 15.9 scoring average, the best among Big 12 freshman and 9th overall in the conference.
As a team the Kansas average ____points per game. The Jayhawks have scored at least 80 points in 14 of their 17 victories. Defense will be crucial on this road game for the Mountaineers if they want to stay in the March madness conversation. Six of the final eight opponents the Mountaineers will face are ranked. The game vs. the Jayhawks this Saturday will be in Lawrence, Kansas at 4pm, broadcast on ESPN.
