Posted:

Back-to-back home runs by senior first baseman Ryan McBroom and senior left fielder Jacob Rice led the WVU baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park.

The win gives WVU a 2-0 series sweep in its first Big 12 action of the season after winning 6-3 on Friday and a game cancellation on Saturday.

Junior right-hander Sean Carley (5-0) stayed undefeated in his seventh start of the season for WVU with a complete game.Carley let up one run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

West Virginia improves to 15-8 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12 after scoring four runs on five hits. Baylor dropped to 13-13 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 action, scoring one run on five hits with one error.

McBroom hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth with a home run to center field that hit off the batter's eye, scoring junior center fielder Bobby Boyd. Rice then followed up with a solo homer over the left field fence, his first of the season, extending the lead to 4-1.

It was the first time since the Oklahoma State game in the Big 12 Championship last season that the Mountaineers went back-to-back. McBroom and Brady Wilson hit consecutive home runs during that game.

West Virginia jumped out to 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Boyd was plated. Boyd tripled down the left field line and was driven in on a sacrifice fly to center field by junior second baseman Billy Fleming.

A single through the left side by Baylor's Adam Toth tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Logan Brown scored the game-tying run after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.

Baylor right-hander Austin Stone went 5.2 innings in the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.

West Virginia will travel to Pitt on Tuesday, April 1 at 4 p.m. Last Tuesday, WVU defeated the Panthers, 6-3, in Morgantown.
