WVU Adds Tarik Phillip to 2014 Class


West Virginia has added one more piece to its basketball team with the signing of Tarik Phillip for the 2014-15 academic year.

Head coach Bob Huggins announced that Phillip, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Mountaineers starting this upcoming season.

Phillip currently attends Independence Community College and come to WVU with three years of eligibility remaining.

"We are excited to be able to land a guard as talented as Tarik in the late signing period," Huggins said in a release from the University. "Every coach we talked to labeled Tarik as a winner. He gives us much-needed versatility in the backcourt with the ability to play both guard positions. We look for him to be very instrumental in our quest to become a great defensive team again."

Huggins had an additional opening with the departure of rising junior guard Eron Harris, who made the decision to transfer from WVU following this past season.

Phillip averaged 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game this past season at Independence Community College, shooting 55 percent from the floor and 38 percent from long distance. He was named Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year in the Eastern Division and was the league's Freshman of the Year.

In addition to Phillip, West Virginia will welcome in two freshmen, Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles, for the 2014-15 recruiting class.

"This class gives us a much-needed shot of athleticism on the perimeter, and a group of guards with tremendous versatility and the ability to play with or without the ball," said Huggins. "This depth should provide us the ability to turn up the pressure defensively."

The Mountaineers finished their second season in the Big 12 with a 17-16 overall record, bowing out in the first round of the NIT.
