MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia’s women’s soccer team is chasing a national championship this weekend in the College Cup, and according to espnW, the Mountaineers took the nation’s best player with them on their cross-country flight to San Jose.

The publication named senior defender Kadeisha Buchanan its National Player of the Year for her work in leading West Virginia to its first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Brampton, Ontario native is piling up honors as she and her teammates compete in the NCAA Tournament, already being named a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy while earning spots on the NSCAA All-Central Region First Team and the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.

Buchanan’s defense has helped the Mountaineers to a program record for shutouts in a season as WVU has held 17 opponents scoreless on its way to another program record of 22 wins.

“It’s an amazing feeling just to be part of this team,” Buchanan said before setting off for California. “Throughout this year, this team has been making history and I think there’s some history left to be made. Although it’s history to make the Final Four, I think it would be cool to get another history hoisting that trophy as well.”

Buchanan and WVU teammate Ashley Lawrence each competed for the Canadian National Team in the 2016 Olympics over the summer, earning a bronze medal in the Rio Games. She was also awarded with the Best Young Player honor at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

West Virginia is poised to play No. 2-seed North Carolina, a 21-time national championship program, Friday for an opportunity to advance to the title match.

“We’ve faced a lot of tough teams, but I think what separates the other teams from UNC is just the history that they’ve made for their program,” Buchanan said of the Tar Heels. “That’s one of the major strengths that they have against us, but in terms of on the field, I think we’re equal and I think we’ll be a tough match.”

Friday’s match gets underway at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
