GAME PREVIEW: WVU Heads to Norman to Take On Oklahoma

The No. 13 West Virginia Mountaineers (18-5, Conf. 6-4) head into to Norman, Oklahoma seeking revenge against the Sooners (8-14, Conf. 2-9), who beat the Mountaineers in Morgantown earlier this season 89-87.  Game time is set for 9:00pm E.T. and will be aired on ESPN2.

Their senior point guard, Jordan Woodard, leads OU. Woodard is averaging 15.4 points per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. The Sooners have also been receiving quality minutes from freshman guard, Kameron McGusty. The Katy, Texas native has been averaging 10.3 points per game this season. The Sooners are coming off of a five game losing streak; in fact, the last time the Sooners won a game was against the Mountaineers back in January.

West Virginia is looking to find its consistency once again as the grueling conference schedule has shown to be too much at times for these Mountaineers. WVU is 3-2 in road games this season, and 1-1 in 9pm E.T. games.

The Mountaineers are led by the nucleic trio of Nathan Adrian, Jevon Carter, and Esa Ahmad. Carter and Ahmad are both averaging 11.7 ppg while Adrian is contributing 10.9ppg. Carter is showing signs of being a complete renaissance man on the offensive side of the ball as he is averaging 4.5 assists per game, and 4.3 rebounds per game to add to his 11.7ppg.

WVU Avg. Field Goal – 47.8%

OU Avg. Field Goal – 43.0%

WVU Avg. Rebound – 36.9

OU Avg. Rebound – 38

WVU Avg. Turnovers – 11.7

OU Avg. Turnovers – 14

WVU Avg. 3-Pt. – 36.7%

OU Avg. 3-Pt. – 36.1%

What to Watch For – Free Throws

The Mountaineer’s inconsistent free throw ability has been the talk of Morgantown for the past two to three weeks, and it seemingly began once the Sooners were able to shoot 15-21 from the line compared to the Mountaineers 18-29. Simply put, OU can make free throws, and in a game where West Virginia receives plenty of anticipated reach in and touch foul calls, look for OU to be at the line frequently on Wednesday night.

West Virginia needs to pick up this win any way they can. Looking forward, the Mountaineers will have a tough stretch of games following Wednesday’s matchup in Norman. Kansas State visits Morgantown on Saturday, and then the Mountaineers will have to go to Lawrence, Kansas to face the Jayhawks, and then fly back to face off against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Nobody said the Big 12 Conference was easy, and Wednesday night’s game in Norman will be no different; regardless of records.
