GAME RECAP: WVU Gets Win at Oklahoma

For Mountaineer fans that were able to stay up for the late start of Wednesday night’s game, they were treated to a 61-50 win in Norman, Oklahoma. James Bolden led the Mountaineers with 17 points, and 2 rebounds.

            Throughout the opening minutes of action, the Mountaineers started off slow as the Sooners started out with an 11-2 run. Although it was a slow start, West Virginia was able to go on an 8-0 run to make it 10-11 with 13 minutes to go. James Bolden gave the Mountaineers a spark with 7 of the 8 points during the run. Neither team was able to shoot well as the Mountaineers and Sooners were shooting 25% and 28% from the field, respectively.

            The Mountaineers led at halftime 27-25. James Bolden led the Mountaineers with 15 points. Oklahoma’s Kameron McGusty accrued 9 points by halftime. It seemed that the Mountaineers and Sooners were feeling each other out during the first half of this ball game. The Sooners committed 11 turnovers, though the Mountaineers had only accrued 18 rebounds to the Sooners’ 22.

            WVU: 10-29

            OU: 8-27

First Half 3pt-Shooting:

            WVU: 5-12

            OU: 4-9

First Half Turnovers:

            WVU: 8

            OU: 11

            WVU: 2-4

            OU:  5-7

            Heading into the second half both teams continued to battle one another as the Mountaineers led 38-34 with 12 minutes to play. James Bolden continued to lead the Mountaineers with 17 points, while Nathan Adrian trailed Bolden in points with 6. Esa Ahmad had been virtually invisible during the contest shooting 0-2 with only 1 point. West Virginia had created 6 turnovers in the second half. The Mountaineers began to pull away with less than ten minutes to play as they led 45-38 with 8 minutes to play.

            OU: 16-48

            WVU: 9-19

            OU: 6-14

            By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Mountaineers had gotten their revenge against the Sooners. Oklahoma is now riding a six game losing streak and will have to go on the road to face Iowa State this Saturday at 6:00pm. Bob Huggins and Company will be back in action this Saturday as the Mountaineers host the Kansas State Wildcats at the Coliseum. Game time is set for 12:00pm E.T. (NOON), and will be aired on ESPN.
