GAME PREVIEW: WVU Prepares for No. 3 Kansas

Coming off a home win against Kansas State, the No.13 West Virginia University men’s basketball team takes on No. 3 Kansas as part of ESPN’s Big Monday.

The Mountaineers took the first matchup in Morgantown 85-69, but the Jayhawks are a different animal at home.

In the game against Kansas State, junior Jevon Carter led the way with 19 points. In a game with 54 fouls called, WVU took advantage hitting 17-21 from the free throw line.  The Mountaineers won handily 85-66.

Kansas is coming off an 80-79 win against Texas Tech. Freshman Josh Jackson scored a career high 31 points in a signature performance.

Despite Iowa State ending Kansas’ 54 game win streak at home, the Mountaineers are yet to win at Allen Fieldhouse where the Jayhawks have an overall record of 212–10 under coach Bill Self.

Sophomore Esa Ahmad had 27 points and five rebounds in a career night in the last game. Ahmad’s play has been inconsistent since, but WVU will need a similar performance from him to get similar results.

Ahmad’s counterpart and consensus lottery pick Jackson had 22 points before he fouled out in the last contest. The matchup at forward could be decisive in the outcome of this Big 12 battle.

The Mountaineers were able to accrue 13 turnovers with the press and out-rebounded the Jayhawks, something that only happened four times previously.

Kansas will be looking for revenge, while WVU will be looking to get a win in the only Big 12 venue they have not yet. The game tips at 9 p.m.
