Talking to his mom and listening to Zen music.

That is how junior forward Elijah Macon said he got prepared for Saturday’s game against Texas Tech.

Whatever was the topic of conversation or on the playlist, it lit a fire that showed on the court. Macon had his best performance of the season, finishing with 17 points, one shy of his career-high, and a season-high 12 rebounds.

“That’s the Elijah Macon everyone thought we got when we recruited him,” Coach Huggins said of Macon’s performance.

For senior forward Nate Adrian, there was only one word that summed up Macon’s night – "Finally."

“We know that is the way he is capable of playing,” said Adrian. “He wanted to go out and play hard and he did. Good things come from that.”

At the half, Macon only had four points and two rebounds listed by his name on the stat sheet. It seemed that as the game got deeper, his energy level only increased.

“He was locked in,” added Tarik Phillip. “He executed down the stretch.”

In the middle of the second half, he hit three consecutive shots. The third shot came after a Tarik Phillip steal, and once Macon tossed it in the WVU Coliseum erupted, and so did Macon. The series of shots put the Mountaineers up by seven points, and you could see right there a confidence in him that hasn’t been visible in many games this season.

He played a key part in overtime, going 3-4 from the line and coming up with six rebounds. Of those six, four key rebounds came at the defensive end.

“His attitude has been so much better. He’s become extremely coachable, he’s listening more and trying to understand and not just play basketball,” Huggins added.

Macon put up eight points and three rebounds in the win against Kansas State and eight points and eight rebounds in Monday’s loss at Kansas. He said there isn’t a key to the way he played in the double overtime win on Saturday, just a new way of finding motivation.

“I prayed, I talked to my mom a lot before the game. I had crazy energy, I don’t know where it came from.” Macon said. “I’ve been staying in touch with my family and friends before the game and just motivating myself.”
