MORGANTOWN -

West Virginia will open the 2017 football season in a nationally televised Sunday evening showcase this fall.

WVU and Virginia Tech announced Friday that their season opener has been moved to Sunday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. The meeting will take place in Landover, Maryland at the home of the NFL’s Washington Redskins, FedEx Field.

This will be the first game between the old Big East rivals since the 2005 season, when the Hokies got the better of the Mountaineers in Morgantown. The series dates back to 1912, the fifth-longest series in WVU history with 51 games. WVU leads the series 28-22-1 as the teams battle for the coveted Black Diamond Trophy.

West Virginia has played at FedEx Field twice before, including a 35-32 win over BYU in the 2016 season.

WVU is 3-1 in games played on a Sunday, with the most recent result being a 34-13 win over Marshall in a 2011 game that was shortened due to lightning.

The Mountaineers are coming off of a 10-3 season in which they set program records for the most overall victories and the most league victories since joining the Big 12 Conference.

After Virginia Tech, West Virginia returns home to complete non-conference action against East Carolina and Delaware State before opening Big 12 play with back-to-back road games, first at Kansas and then at TCU.

Dana Holgorsen will lead the Mountaineers in the annual Gold-Blue Game on April 15th as WVU concludes spring practice at Milan Puskar Stadium. The game will air around the state on Nexstar Media Group channels.
