MORGANTOWN -

For the second straight year, the Mountaineers have a player selected in the WNBA Draft, as Lanay Montgomery was taken No. 30 overall by the Seattle Storm.

Montgomery becomes the sixth West Virginia University basketball player to be picked in the WNBA Draft.

It is truly an honor to have my name called at the WNBA Draft. I started playing basketball my freshman of year of high school; and now to be drafted is an amazing feeling,” Montgomery said in a statement Thursday night. “It shows the hard work and dedication I’ve put into this game. I’d like to say thank you to my dad Robert Montgomery for introducing me to the game and my AAU coach Milton Kimbrough for working with me and teaching me the game. I’d also like to thank my college coaches for the countless hours spent working with me on developing my game. Last, but not least, I want to say thank you to my basketball family and family for the unwavering support throughout this process. I look forward to my journey with the Seattle Storm.”

In her final season with the Mountaineers, Montgomery contributed 10.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while blocking 99 shots as WVU finished with a 24-11 overall record and a Big 12 tournament championship.

The Pittsburgh native registered 330 blocks over the course of her career, good for second-best in West Virginia program history and fourth all-time in the Big 12 conference. She was twice named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team for her efforts with WVU.

“There is no one more deserving of this moment than Lanay Montgomery,” WVU Coach Mike Carey said in a statement. “With her tremendous work ethic, Lanay has made great strides in her five years at West Virginia University. We are very proud of her accomplishments and I wish her the best of luck in Seattle.”

The Storm went 16-18 a year ago on the way to a seven seed in the WNBA Playoffs before falling to the Atlanta Dream.

A year ago, Atlanta made Bria Holmes the highest pick from West Virginia University when the Dream selected the former Mountaineer guard with the 11th pick in the WNBA Draft.

Montgomery joins Holmes, Asya Bussie, Olayinka Sanni, Yolanda Paige and Kate Bulger as the only players from West Virginia to be taken in the draft process.
