After the series win over No. 3 TCU this weekend, the West Virginia University baseball team made the program’s first appearance in the Baseball America Top 25 Poll. The Mountaineers check in at No. 21 this week. They also come in a No. 21 in the D1 Baseball Top 25.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) and USA Today Coaches Poll also has voted the Mountaineers into the Top 25 for the first time in team history, at No. 24 by the NCBWA and No. 25 in the Coaches Poll.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has WVU at No. 25, marking the first time the Mountaineers appear in the publication’s poll since the final rankings in 1982, when they were voted No. 16.

West Virginia is also ranked No. 8 in the NCAA RPI. WVU is one of two Big 12 teams in the top 10 and one of five in the top 21. The Big 12 has the No. 1 conference RPI in the country.

On Friday, in game one against the Horned Frogs, a walk-off sacrifice fly earned WVU a 5-4 victory.  Saturday, in front of a program best 3,415 fans, the Mountaineers saw a 6-2 lead turn into an 8-6 loss, leveling the series.

The Mountaineers clinched the series against No. 3 TCU with a walk-off winner on Sunday afternoon, putting them one game out of first place in the Big 12 Conference.

“We went into this season saying ‘hey, we’re out to prove something.’ They keep telling us we’re not good enough to play in the postseason, so that’s what we’ve been using for motivation. The best way to motivate this team is to tell them they can’t do something,” head coach Randy Mazey said on Sunday.

It was WVU’s fourth consecutive conference series win.

WVU improves to 21-13 on the season and 8-4 in Big 12 play.

No. 21 West Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 against Marshall. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, WV. WVU won the season’s first contest between the two 14-7 at the Monongalia County Ball Park on April 4.
