MORGANTOWN -

In an announcement that will shock absolutely no one, the WVU men’s basketball team revealed its Most Valuable Player for the 2016-17 season and it wound up going to two Mountaineers.

Senior forward Nathan Adrian and junior guard Jevon Carter split the honor at Wednesday night’s banquet in Morgantown, recognizing each player’s accomplishments in guiding West Virginia to the program’s 10th Sweet Sixteen.

Carter led the team with 13.5 points per game and was the catalyst on the “Press Virginia” defense as he forced 92 steals on his way to earning multiple national Defensive Player of the Year honors. Carter was also, fittingly, named West Virginia’s best defender at the banquet.

Carter has submitted his name for consideration in the upcoming NBA Draft, but has not signed with an agent. He will have until May 24 to decide if he will stay eligible in the draft or return for his senior season with the Mountaineers.

Adrian, a Morgantown native, found a place on the All-Big 12 Third Team and the All-Big 12 Defensive Team at the point of WVU’s pressure defense. He averaged 9.6 points per game and led the team in rebounding with six per game.

In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Adrian was named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball First Team.

West Virginia announced some other award winners, including Charleston native James Long taking the “Unsung Hero and Team Man” honor following his final season with the Mountaineers. Tarik Phillip (Sixth Man), Teyvon Myers (Charge Leader) and Elijah Macon (Most Improved) also earned honors.

The Mountaineers finished the season ranked No. 11 in the final USA Today Coaches’ Poll while ranking second in the Big 12 conference regular season and tournament for the second-straight season.
