Four member of the West Virginia University football team have named to watch lists. It was announced on Monday that quarterback Will Grier and running back Justin Crawford have named to the 2017 Maxwell Award watch list, and safeties Dravon Askew-Henry and Kyzir White are on the 2017 Bednarik Award watch list.

The Maxwell Award honors college football’s top player. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson won the Maxwell last season, and joins Grier, Crawford and 82 others on this year’s watch list.

Coach Holgorsen announced on June 20 that Grier is eligible for the season opener against Virginia Tech. The Florida transfer sat out 2016 due to NCAA transfer rules. In 2015, he played in six games as a Gator, started five, and completed 106 of his 161 passes for 1,204 yards and 10 touchdowns. He helped lead Florida to a Top 10 ranking and 6-0 start. In the annual Gold-Blue Game, completed 12-of-18 passes for 202 yards.

In his first season in Gold and Blue, the Justin Crawford earned the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honor and a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team. He saw action in all 13 games and started in four. He finished the season with 1,184 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 6 nationally in rushing yards per carry. In the Gold-Blue Game, he put up Gold’s first points with a 51-yard touchdown run.

The Bednarik Award recognizes the top college defensive player. Askew-Henry started in 26 games in his first two seasons before suffering a season-ending knee injury leading up to the 2016 season. In 2015, he finished with 59 tackles, an interception and four pass breakups.

In his first season with West Virginia, White started all 12 games and finished with 58 tackles, including 48 solo stops, and two forced fumbles.

The semifinalists for the Maxwell Award and Bednarik Award will be announced on October 30, the finalists on November 20, and the winner will be revealed on on December 7.
