MORGANTOWN – The No. 1 West Virginia University women’s soccer team opens its home season on Thursday. The Mountaineers host No. 10 Virginia at 7 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. This is second straight season WVU opens its home slate against a top-25 opponent.

“We hope that we have the No. 1 crowd behind us as they were all year last year,” head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “We hope we are picking up new fans but our old Mountaineer faithful are still coming out and making sure they rock Dick Dlesk.”

WVU enters the match up with a 1-0 record after a hard fought win at No. 5 Georgetown last week.

All-American Michaela Abam scored the only goal, marking the 33rd of her career. Sophomore Rylee Foster, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the week, had a strong outing in the net, finishing with seven saves, five coming in the first half. The Hoyas finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on-goal.

“My biggest positive was we won, and my biggest negative is we have to take care of the ball better,” Izzo-Brown said.

The Hoyas weren’t the only thing the Mountaineers had to overcome, the heat and humidity played a huge part in the battle. The game was moved up three hours due to the threat of inclement weather.

Virginia comes to Morgantown with a season-opening win under its belt as well. It scored a goal in each half resulting in a 2-0 victory over UNCW on Friday.

“Their ball movement, they are so precise in what they do and how they move the ball. There is just so much talent around the field,” Izzo-Brown said of the challenges Virginia provides. “The best in the business is coming to town so we just have to bring our game and make sure mentally we are ready and focused.”

“Virginia is a great off team, they have a lot of movement up top The back line has weakness there so hopefully we can counter attack their mistakes,” added junior defender Bianca St. Georges.

West Virginia is 3-9-1 all-time against Virginia. The last time the two met in 2011, the then No.13 Mountaineers fell 2-1 to then No. 10. When the two faced off a year earlier in Morgantown, it was the gold and blue that came away victorious.

“It’s going to be a great match up of who is the better Virginia, so it is going be a great match up," Izzo-Brown said. "This team is going to give us a lot of fits but we are going to return the favor.”

The No. 1 Mountaineers look to remain undefeated as they host the No. 10 Cavaliers on Thursday, August 24 at 7 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.  It's a Dollar Day, and all tickets, popcorn, small sodas, nachos, mini pepperoni rolls and candy bars will be available for $1 each. Additionally, it's Poster Night, and all fans in attendance will receive a free Mountaineer schedule poster.

*A note for fans attending the match, don’t forget WVU’s clear bag policy will be implemented starting with this game.
