Game Preview: WVU Goes for Win No. 2 vs Delaware St.

West Virginia (1-1) will look to build off last weekend’s convincing win over East Carolina when it hosts FCS opponent Delaware State (0-2) Saturday.

A week ago, the Mountaineer first-team offense picked up 494 yards and put up 49 points in the first half, while the first-team defense held the Pirates without a touchdown in the opening 30 minutes of play.

“I liked how we started fast,” WVU offensive coordinator Jake Spavital said Tuesday. “Set the tone early and let’s hit the game running.”

Despite the opponent, head coach Dana Holgorsen said the Mountaineers are approaching this week like any other.

“Don’t care who we’re playing, I think we’ll be excited about attacking the week the appropriate way,” he said.

West Virginia is one of just two FBS teams that Delaware State plays this year. The Hornets ends the season with a trip to Tallahassee to play Florida State.

Delaware St. starts the year with each of its first three games on the road.

The Hornets have not shown to be a very good scoring team so far this season, only managing a combined 18 points, which is fewer points than West Virginia scored in either the first or second quarters of last week’s game.

That’s not a good sign for a Delaware St. defense that, with the Hornets leading 12-7, gave up 21 points to Howard last week while the offense could only muster three points, over the final 40 minutes of action.

Kenny Carter’s offense managed just one first down and 49 yards in the entirety of the second half.

The Hornets defense has been shredded for over 430 yards in each of its first two games. In the season opener against Delaware, the Blue Hens racked up 226 rushing yards. However, Hampton picked up over 300 yards through the air last weekend.

Despite the lack of offense shown by the Hornets thus far, Tony Gibson echoed sentiments on Tuesday that the defense needs to improve.

“The thing that was frustrating was we were missing too many tackles,” Gibson said. “Didn’t like where we were at.”

This is the first meeting between West Virginia and Delaware State.  Kickoff is at noon.
