MORGANTOWN -

Brendan Ferns is undergoing surgery for the second time in two years with the Mountaineers.

The redshirt freshman linebacker hurt his shoulder in a 56-34 win over Kansas on Saturday as the entire WVU defense suffered from multiple injuries that left inexperienced players on the field across the board.

“Unfortunately, he’s going to have to have shoulder surgery. This is two years in a row,” West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said of Ferns. “That’s football. There’s risk involved in it. Obviously we don’t want to lose anybody, but people are going to. He was one of our most valuable special teams guys, playing as much or more snaps as anybody.”

Ferns, a former four-star recruit out of St. Clairsville, Ohio, missed his true freshman year after sustaining a season-ending knee injury during preseason work.

The back-up linebacker could be seen with his arm in a sling after being tended to by the WVU training staff for the injury, which he sustained in the first half of the game in Lawrence.

The Mountaineers are in the midst of a bye week before returning to action on Oct. 7 at No. 9 TCU.
