MORGANTOWN - Senior forward Teana Muldrow led six players in double figures as the West Virginia University women’s basketball team rolled past West Virginia Wesleyan, 113-54, in an exhibition game at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Sunday.

The Mountaineers shot 69 percent for a 34-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back, dominating the point for 76 points paint and scoring 40 off turnovers.

West Virginia dressed just nine players for the game, with all nine seeing the court. Five players – including three true freshmen – donned the Gold and Blue for the first time ever on Sunday.

“Big numbers don’t matter. You can look at the box score. We scored 42 points in the first quarter when we were fresh,” WVU coach Mike Carey said. “Then as the game went on, a bunch of turnovers and no execution. People came off of the bench, standing around, the defense didn’t execute on the other end. It’s going to be like that all year unless we start getting people back in the rotation.”

Muldrow went 12-of-16 from the field for a team-best 28 points to go along with four steals. Junior guard Naomi Davenport had 19 points, including a pair of treys, in her first unofficial game in a Mountaineer uniform. Forward Kristina King put up 18 points, while guard Katrina Pardee made a pair of three-point shots in scoring 15 points on the day. Also making her unofficial WVU debut, freshman Destiny Harden went 5-of-6 for 12 points as WVU got 22 points from the bench. Guard Chania Ray had 11 points and nine assists, adding a pair of rebounds as well.

West Virginia finished the game shooting 59.2 percent (45-of-76) from the field and made six treys on the day. WVU also went 17-of-28 from the charity stripe.

The Mountaineers came away with a 49-32 advantage on the boards, led by eight rebounds from Pardee and seven from Muldrow. Harden notched six in her first time out, while King led the way with five offensive boards and Davenport chipped in five defensive rebounds.

Ray had a team-best seven steals as West Virginia Wesleyan turned the ball over 31 times. The Mountaineers came away with 22 fast break points, and added 16 second-chance points.

A 15-0 run midway through the first quarter gave WVU a 284 lead with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter. Davenport hit three treys on the scoring streak, also coming up with a steal and a fast break layup to cap the run. Ray and Muldrow each added another three for a 34-8 lead with just under two minutes to play as the Mountaineers went 4-for-6 in the first quarter. Muldrow added three more layups as the Mountaineers scored 11 straight to end the first quarter with a 42-8 lead over West Virginia Wesleyan.

King made several big plays in the second quarter, scoring a pair in the paint before recording a block and the fast break layup of the ensuing rebound for a 49-12 WVU lead with 5:41 to go in the half. Davenport sunk two at the line for a 53-19 advantage with 1:38 to play, and King added two more in the paint soon after. Pardee nailed the Mountaineers’ sixth three of the day with four seconds to go as West Virginia took a 61-24 lead into the locker room at the half.

A pair of fast-break layups from Muldrow and Pardee helped the Mountaineers start the third quarter on a 6-0 run. Pardee sunk a pair at the free-throw line and added two more in the paint soon after to give WVU a 49-point advantage at 81-32 with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. Pardee was at it again soon after, hitting a layup and the ensuing free throw for an 86-38 WVU lead with 1:11 to play in the third. Krystaline McCune hit the charity stripe for a point as West Virginia carried an 87-42 lead out of the third quarter.

WVU opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run before the Bobcats hit a trey three minutes into the action. However, the Mountaineers kept rolling, making it a 61-point advantage on a fast break layup from Harden with 1:22 to go for their largest lead of the night.

West Virginia will open the 2017-18 season on Friday, Nov. 10, when the team hosts Central Connecticut State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum.
