MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Coming up in December, WVU men's basketball will play in the 24th annual Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
The Mountaineers will face Florida Dec. 4 at 9 p.m. in the nightcap of a doubleheader, which will air on ESPN. Fellow Big 12 program Oklahoma will meet Notre Dame for the first time in the event's early game.
Head coach Bob Huggins, who leads fundraising efforts to benefit cancer research, said the Mountaineers are honored to be one of the four teams chosen for the event.
"The Jimmy V Classic is one of the premier events during the college basketball season, and the Jimmy V Classic during V Week brings awareness to such a terrible disease because every one of us has been affected by cancer in one way or another," Huggins said Wednesday in a statement. "When we lost our mother in 2003, my family and I started the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund, and we have raised more than two million dollars in cancer research. We all need to join the fight to end this deadly disease.”
This will mark West Virginia's third appearance in the Jimmy V Classic (2008, 2015). The featured schools have combined for 13 Final Four appearances, and have all advanced to the Elite Eight or further in the NCAA Tournament over the last decade.
