West Virginia gymnastics set a record in the classroom this season, with 9 team members earning a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the 2019-2020 season, the conference announced Thursday.
The nine Mountaineers honored tops the previous record of eight, set in both 2018 and 2019. In total, 35 Big 12 gymnasts were recognized, 33 of which are on the first team.
Senior Julia Merwin earned her third first team honor and junior McKenna Linnen her second, but both made the list with a 4.0 grade point average. Seniors Abby Kaufman and Erica Fontaine also made their third appearances on the list, while Junior Sydney Marler made the list for second time.
After making the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team last year, sophomores Esparanza Abarca, Kendra Combs and Rachel Hornung earned their first appearances on the list.
In order to earn a spot on the first team, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Second team members garnered a GPA of 3.0-3.19.
