Junior defender Kevin Morris of the West Virginia University men’s soccer team has been named to the 2019 Academic All-District 2 Men’s Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
The accolade is the first of Morris’ career and the program’s first since Stephen Banick and senior defender/midfielder Ryan Kellogg were placed on the team in 2017.
In all, WVU has now had 11 players named to the Academic All-District Team since 2006.
Morris advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, where first-, second- and third-team honors will be selected in the coming weeks and announced in early December.
A native of Mt. Airy, Maryland, Morris has started in 46 of his 55 career matches played, including all 15 this season. He has registered one goal and two assists for four total points in more than 1,300 minutes played in 2019. On Sept. 17, he scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute to help the Mountaineers defeat Cincinnati, 2-1, in overtime, at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Morris has maintained a 3.93 grade-point average while majoring in mathematics. He was an Academic All-MAC and Academic All-Big 12 At-Large First Team selection as a sophomore in 2018. He also was selected to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in 2017.
Morris has been featured on the Big 12 Commissioner’s and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Rolls, and he has been placed on the President’s and Dean’s Lists during his time at WVU.
The Mountaineers close the 2019 regular season by hosting Akron on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
