MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - WVU women's basketball coach Mike Carey has a few concerns about his team as the regular season nears.

He's not worried about his offense. Plenty of players can score. But he says the team's defense needs attention.

Carey said Monday that the team's energy and focus on defense isn't where it needs to be, which is why he's focusing on defending, rebounding and transition play in practices.

“That’s how we’re gonna win this year. We can score, but we’ve got to keep them from scoring, and we’ve got to rebound," said Carey. "I mean, it’s a lot easier to make a layup than it is a 3-pointer. If we can create turnovers with our defense, then we’re gonna get a lot of layups along with the 3-pointers.”

Senior Naomi Davenport explained why it's important for the team to focus on its defense, and that she hopes she'll feel more comfortable on the court in her final season:

The Mountaineers will host Division II West Liberty Tuesday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game at the WVU Coliseum, part of their Haunted Hoops showcase.
