WVU women’s soccer is once again the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 Conference.
The No. 9 Mountaineers are projected to finish first in the league for the sixth season in a row, according the Big 12 preseason poll, which was released Thursday.
The poll is based on votes by the Big 12’s 10 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.
Oklahoma State received one first-place vote and sits No. 2 in the preseason poll. No. 15 Baylor and No. 17 Texas tied for the No. 3 spot, with the Longhorns also receiving one first-place vote.
From there, TCU was voted No. 5, while Texas Tech was placed No. 6. Kansas ranks No. 7, ahead of Oklahoma, Kansas State and Iowa State, which rounded out this year’s preseason poll.
The five-time Big 12 champion Mountaineers have swept the conference titles in three of the last five years, also winning Big 12 Soccer Championship crowns in 2013, 2014 and 2016. WVU has earned the Big 12’s preseason No. 1 ranking and gone on to win the regular-season and postseason titles more times than any other school in conference history.
WVU is 42-2-4 all-time in Big 12 play and unbeaten at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers posted a 7-1-1 conference mark last season, finishing in second place.
West Virginia opens regular season play Aug. 17 at No. 4 Penn State.
