WVU moves up in polls as regular season nears end

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s soccer team moved up two spots to No. 16 in this week’s United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women’s National Poll.

The ranking equals the Mountaineers’ (9-3-3, 5-1) best position since re-entering the poll two weeks ago.

WVU is ranked in all three national polls this week for the first time since Aug. 21. The Mountaineers also rank No. 16 in the Soccer America Women’s College Top 25 and sit at No. 23 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s Division I Top 25.

Additionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 18 in the fifth NCAA RPI of the season.

Stanford (12-0-1) continues to rank No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. USC (12-1-1) and North Carolina (12-2-1) follow at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Georgetown (13-0-2) ranks No. 4, and Texas A&M (14-1-1) ranks No. 5.

Virginia (12-2) sits at No. 6 and is followed by Santa Clara (12-2-1) at No. 7. South Carolina (11-2-1) ranks No. 8, and UCLA (9-3-1) and Duke (11-2-2) round out the top 10.

Three Big 12 Conference teams rank inside this week’s poll: No. 13 Baylor (12-4), No. 16 WVU and No. 17 Texas (11-1-2).

The Mountaineers close their regular-season road slate this weekend with a pair of matches in Oklahoma. WVU kicks at Oklahoma State on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. EST, before facing Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. EST.
