MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After an 0-1-1 start – its worst in nearly 20 years – WVU women’s soccer has fallen in the national polls.
The Mountaineers dropped to No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Division I poll after debuting at No. 9 in the preseason rankings. They also sit at No. 18 this week in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll.
According to WVU Athletics, the Mountaineers have appeared in the top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches regular season polls every week since Sept. 3, 2013.
WVU earned just one point from its two matches at the Penn State Invitational, marking the team’s worst two-game start to a season since 1999.
Penn State, which defeated WVU 1-0 Friday, moved up to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches top 25, trailing No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 UCLA.
The Mountaineers continue their season-opening road trip at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup this weekend in West Lafayette, Indiana. WVU kicks off against host Purdue (1-0) Friday at 7 p.m. at Folk Field, and then will meet No. 19 Northwestern (2-0) Sunday at noon.
