GAME RECAP: West Virginia routs Youngstown State, 52-17

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After finding the endzone just one time as a junior, wide receiver Gary Jennings made it his home Saturday night.

Quarterback Will Grier connected with Jennings for three touchdowns, helping West Virginia cruise past Youngstown State, 52-17.

“We gave him so much crap last year for having one touchdown," said head coach Dana Holgorsen. "He scored one percent of the time that he touched the ball. He’s tired of hearing it. I can’t explain that. He’s a really good player. We focused on that and probably targeted him more in those situations, so it was good to see him get in the endzone.”

Jennings has scored four times in West Virginia's first two games of the season, effectively doubling his career touchdown output.

Despite an interception on the Mountaineers' opening drive, Grier threw for 332 yards and four scores on 21-of-26 passing.

But on a rain-soaked night at Milan Puskar Stadium, the WVU ground game provided a major pop. Redshirt freshman Alec Sinkfield opened the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run, the first of his career. Freshman Leddie Brown found the endzone for the first time, and became the first Mountaineer to eclipse 100 yards rushing in a single game this season.

WVU scored 21 points in the third quarter for the second-straight outing, and a sequence late in that quarter put things out of reach. Brown's touchdown scamper capped an 82-yard drive with 4:02 remaining in the quarter. Dravon Askew-Henry then came up with an interception on the Penguins' first play from scrimmage, allowing Kennedy McKoy become the third Mountaineer back to score just two plays later.

The Mountaineers expanded their lead from 28-14 to 42-14 during that 42-second span, seizing complete control of the game.

Senior wide receiver Dominique Maiden put an exclamation point on the outing with a 40-yard touchdown reception, his first of the season. An Evan Staley field goal midway through the final quarter capped the scoring.
