3:37: Despite getting the opening lead and forcing several turnovers, Best Virginia has struggled so far to pull away. At the first stoppage of play, BV leads Seven City Royalty 13-9.
First subs are made for Best Virginia: Truck Bryant checks in for Paige, Nate Adrian for Williams and John Flowers for Da’Sean Butler.
John Flowers gets an open look as the clock winds down, but can’t get it to go. At the end of the first, Best Virginia leads Royalty 20-14.
8:25: Royalty opens the scoring with a three-pointer, but Jaysean Paige drives to the basket for the immediate answer.
6:36: Paige has the hot hand. Best Virginia is on a 8-0 lead, and 6 of those points have come from no. 2.
4:38: Kevin Jones might as well be playing wideout. Two consecutive Royalty turnovers turn into full-court heaves to Jones, who is waiting under the basket. He converts the first, is fouled on the second.
4:00: Royalty breaks their more than 4-minute scoring drought with a short jumper, halting Best Virginia’s 10-0 run.
3:35: Paige comes out of the timeout still hot, nailing a three in the face of Royalty’s zone. Royalty answers with a three of their own.
Best Virginia started the contest playing zone defense, but they’ve switched to man-to-man in the second.
1:43: Best Virginia leads 33-24.
Heading to halftime, Best Virginia leads 39-27. Jaysean Paige leads all scorers with his hot hand, logging 12 points so far.
As we head into the second half, it’s good to get a quick refresher on the rules, including the “Elam ending.” Here are some explanations for the different rules.
Royalty puts a two-pointer in to start off the second half, but it’s answered by a Juwan Staten mid-range jumper. “Wanny” has 4 points so far.
6:06: Royalty cuts into the Best Virginia lead, making it 44-37. Da’Sean Butler heads to the bench with his third personal foul.
On the floor: Staten, Paige, Flowers Jones, Adrian.
5:29: Paige is keeping his scoring going, earning himself an and-one to get his scoring total to 15. Best Virginia is up 47-37.
3:45: Teyvon Myers makes his first appearance for Best Virginia as they lead 50-42 in the third. They switch to full-court press, and he is at the top.
3:24: Myers commits a foul, Best Virginia’s fifth of the quarter — that puts Royalty in the bonus. Best Virginia up 50-44.
End 3Q: The third quarter ends on a sloppy note for both teams, but Royalty claws back to get within 6. Best Virginia leads 54-48 heading into the final quarter of play.
There is currently some discrepancy about the scoreboard. Officials are currently discussing to figure out the correct score for both teams.
The score is settled at 57-53. The game is back underway.
8:00: Flowers puts his head down, drives, makes it, and gets the foul. He converts the and-one to extend it to 60-53.
4:23: With the clock nearing the 4-minute mark, Best Virginia leads 68-59. With the Elam ending, the target score will be set after the first stoppage of play under 4 minutes.
After his team starts 10-for-10 from the foul line, Devin Williams misses the first free throw of the game for Best Virginia (his only missed free throw of the game).
3:59: With the score at 70-59, Truck Bryant commits a foul to stop the clock. With the Elam ending the target score is set at 78, meaning the first team to hit that mark moves on to the next round.
Devin Williams sinks a pair of free throws to inch Best Virginia closer to the lead, 72-60.
Staten gets the ball on a fast break and is able to lay it in, but gets fouled in the process. He also hit the deck pretty hard, and he is still getting up. He gets up and takes his free throw, but he misses and heads to the locker room.
Truck Bryant gets Best Virginia within a bucket making his first free throw, and Williams flushes in the missed second.
