Mountaineers tabbed No. 8 in Big 12 preseason poll

Ties lowest ranking since joining league in 2012

For the third time since 2012, WVU football is picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 Conference preseason media poll.

The Mountaineers find themselves just above Kansas State and Kansas, the No. 9 and 10 teams respectively in the preseason poll.

This ranking ties West Virginia’s lowest since it joined the league in 2012, as it ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll in 2013 and 2014. The Mountaineers outperformed their preseason rating in 2014, going 7-6 and reaching the Liberty Bowl.

Historically speaking, preseason rankings haven’t been very accurate in predicting how WVU will fare in Big 12 play. For example, the Mountaineers were picked to finish seventh in 2016 before compiling a 10-win campaign and finishing near the top of the standings.

Then last year, the Mountaineers were picked to finish second in the league behind Oklahoma, but ended up tied for third with Iowa State after dropping back-to-back conference games to end the regular season, and missing out on the Big 12 Championship game.

Oklahoma is once again picked to win the Big 12, while Texas is picked to finish No. 2. See the full preseason ranking below:

   1. Oklahoma (68) — 761
    2. Texas (9) — 696
    3. Iowa State — 589
    4. TCU — 474
    5. Oklahoma State — 460
    6. Baylor — 453
    7. Texas Tech — 281
    8. West Virginia — 241
    9. Kansas State — 191
  10. Kansas — 89
