No. 20 WVU finishes conference schedule with 7-4 win at Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. - WVU Baseball completed its 2019 conference schedule with a victory, defeating Kansas State on the road 7-4.

For the third straight game, WVU (31-18, 13-11 Big 12) started off with a first-inning home run — this time, a 2-run shot hands of Marques Inman.

Kansas State would answer that inning off of Terrence Spurlin’s RBI single which brought Thomas Hughes across the plate.

Brandon White would extend the lead to 3-1 in the 5th, flying out to center field while scoring TJ Lake.

The Mountaineers were able to get their bats going throughout the game, connecting on 15 hits. 

Kansas State was not without their offense, though. Chris Ceballos again brought his game behind the plate, hitting a sac fly in the 6th to send Terrence Spurlin home, making the game 3-2.

The Wildcat offense really got rolling in the 7th, with Kansas State taking the lead by singles from Hughes and Cameron Thompson, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of KSU.

Coach Randy Mazey would take starter Kade Strowd in the 7th. In 6.2 innings, Strowd gave up 4 runs on 5 hits.

The 8th inning would be the swing to put the Mountaineers in the lead. It got started by Ivan Gonzalez, who got a hit in an unconventional way.

That would kick off a three-run swing that put the Mountaineers back in the lead. It began with a sac fly from TJ Lake, putting Paul McIntosh across the plate. Tyler Doanes would also sac fly, scoring Ivan Gonzalez. The final nail would be put in by Brandon White’s single to put Kevin Brophy.

Sam Kessler would get the save for the Mountaineers, his 7th of the season.

WVU will finish their road stretch on Tuesday at Pitt. That game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at PNC Park.
