For the first time in West Virginia program history, seven Mountaineers have been taken off the board in the MLB Draft. The record was broken in the 29th round when catcher Chase Illig was selected by the New York Yankees.
While Illig was sidelined for 2019, he caught the eye of MLB scouts through his performance in the California Collegiate League, highlighted by his ability to hit from both sides of the plate. The Bluefield native batted .223 in two seasons with the Mountaineers.
Illig is the second Mountaineer catcher to be selected this year, preceded by Ivan Gonzalez’s selection by the Chicago White Sox in the 8th round.
