It’s time to say goodbye to the hardwood that is so familiar to many Mountaineer fans.
As it was announced in early 2019, the playing surface of the WVU Coliseum will be getting a makeover before this upcoming basketball season. That makeover, as indicated by a tweet from GamedayWVU, has officially begun:
The outgoing court design was established in 2009, which can be denoted by the exposed “BIG EAST” logo in one of the free throw lanes.
The announcement of the floor’s redesign piqued the interest of Mountaineer fans far and wide, and Athletic Director Shane Lyons says many even gave their creative input.
“I think I had about 80 different renditions of what people thought the floor needed to look like,” Lyons said with a laugh. “I will say, we did it internally.”
Kristin Coldsnow, a multimedia specialist with the WVU Athletic Department and the main designer of the floor.
“I really like it, very clean,” Lyons described. “I think it tells us who we are and our history within the basketball program.
The new one, which was unveiled in May, will mark the sixth court design in Coliseum history.
