1:15 (NU 56, WVU 83): Macke goes to the line after a technical is assessed to Nicholls’s Dexter McClanahan. He sinks both, and the Coliseum goes nuts — possibly the loudest the Mountanieer faithful have been all game.
1:38 (NU 56, WVU 81): Spencer Macke has officially checked in for the first time this game. This one is just about over.
5:00 (NU 54, WVU 71): The Mountaineers are bringing the energy now, and their highlight reel just got a bit longer. Oscar Tshiebwe brought the house down with a pair of dunks to enter double-double territory, while Sean McNeil stops a Nicholls fast break with a swat at the rim. Tshiebwe now leads WVU with 15 points,
10:44 (NU 45, WVU 58): Derek Culver is comfortably the first player in the double-double club, already with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Mountaineers also got a free pair of foul shots when Hunter was called for a technical foul at the 10:57 mark — although McNeil is only able to sink the back end of it.
15:34 (NU 43, WVU 47): West Virginia is looking a bit sluggish out of the break, allowing the Colonels to make up a little ground. Nicholls’s Andre Jones provided a little boost out of the locker room, already with 5 points for the half. Derek Culver, on the other hand, is starting to show up big offensively for WVU, making all three of his attempts for 6 points.
Nicholls is beginning the second half with possession.
HALF: West Virginia leads Nicholls, 31-39. Taz Sherman is the leading scorer for WVU (8 points on perfect shooting so far) along with Tshiebwe, with Matthews, Culver and McNeil right behind with 6.
3:43 (NU 23, WVU 29): West Virginia’s defense is tough to penetrate today. They just forced Nicholls to their third shot clock violation of the game, which also happened to be their ninth turnover. Elvis Harvey Jr. is pacing the Colonels with 9 points.
7:59 (NU 14, WVU 20): WVU goes on an 8-0 run as their offense finds some life. Their bench provided a huge spark, with buckets coming from Brandon Knapper, Taz Sherman and Sean McNeil — the latter two of which came from deep. It’s also a competitive rebounding battle at this point, with the Mountaineers grabbing just one more than the Colonels.
10:58 (NU 14, WVU 12): The Mountaineer offense is struggling today, shooting just 31.3 percent so far in the contest. Their only output has come from Matthews and Oscar Tshiebwe, who have both chipped in 6 points.
15:54 (NU 5, WVU 5): Nicholls has come to play out of the gate, playing tight defense and posing problems for the Mountaineers. D’Angelo Hunter leads the Colonels in scoring with a three-pointer in his return, which ties Emmitt Matthews Jr. for the same mark.
