If the season ended Friday, WVU men’s basketball would be a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
That’s according to a bracket preview released by the NCAA Selection Committee Saturday morning, which pegs the Mountaineers as the No. 2 seed in the West Region and the No. 8 seed overall.
The top team in the West Region, according to this projection, is Gonzaga, which defeated West Virginia in the Sweet 16 in 2017.
Big 12 foes Baylor and Kansas earned No. 1 seeds in the projection, with the Bears earning the top overall ranking.
This projection more clearly indicates what’s on the line this season for WVU, and places an even larger emphasis on West Virginia’s next three league games. The Mountaineers seek a road win Saturday at Oklahoma, before hosting No. 3 Kansas and traveling to No. 1 Baylor.
Winning each of those games — or potentially taking two of three — would help solidify the Mountaineers’ resume for a No. 2 seed, while potentially propelling them back into the hunt for the Big 12 regular season title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
