WVU women’s hoops lands just outside of top 25 ahead of opener

The season opens in just over a week for West Virginia women’s basketball, and they’re already setting themselves up to jockey a spot in the rankings.

In the AP Poll released on Monday, the Mountaineers received 71 total votes, which pits them just six behind 25th-ranked Michigan. There are just two Big 12 teams — defending national champion and second-ranked Baylor and No. 15 Texas — representing the conference in the rankings.

West Virginia got their first unofficial victory in their exhibition game against Salem. The Mountaineers trounced the Tigers, 90-40.

Coach Mike Carey and his team start their season next Thursday at home against St. Francis. That game tips off at 7 p.m.
