Changing trends could benefit WVU LB Long | 2019 NFL Draft Preview

As the 2019 NFL Draft nears, David Long wants to know something:

The reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and former WVU linebacker is one of several former Mountaineers waiting to hear his name called this week.

“It’s definitely exciting. A kid like me, getting real close to their dreams, but it’s definitely been an experience, training and stuff, coming out here and putting your best foot forward. It’s a big thing for everybody,” said Long. “It’s been here and there, but I’ve enjoyed the process.”

Long was a second-team All-American in his final season at WVU, as well as a member of the All-Big 12 First Team. He led the Mountaineers in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss, tying the program record for tackles for loss in a single season with 19.

As he approaches the NFL Draft, Long has received interest from teams as both an inside linebacker and outside linebacker. Though he’s seemingly undersized at 5’11” and 220 pounds, the linebacker position is changing in the NFL, and Long hopes his ability as a textbook tackler will help him succeed at the next level.

“Anywhere they put me, I feel like I can excel in it,” said Long. “That’s the type of player I am.”

Most mock drafts project Long will be selected in the middle rounds. CBS Sports has pegged Long as a fourth-rounder in its seven-round mock draft, while Draftwire predicts Long will land with the Giants in the fifth round.

The NFL Draft begins Thursday in Nashville.
