Football Announces Wide Receiver Addition

West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown has announced that George Campbell, a 6-4, 205-pound, redshirt senior wide receiver from Clearwater, Florida, has signed a grant-in-aid and will transfer to WVU from Florida State University as a graduate transfer. Campbell will have one year of eligibility remaining.

  • Played for coach Willie Taggart at Florida State
  • Returned from injury that limited him to four games in 2017 to play in seven games with one start
  • Finished with four catches for 42 yards with a long of 26 yards
  • Recorded season-best 36 yards on two catches in 36-26 win vs. Samford
  • Caught two passes for six yards at No. 3 Notre Dame in first collegiate start
  • Also saw action against No. 20 Virginia Tech, vs. Northern Illinois, at Louisville, vs. No. 22 Boston College and vs. No. 13 Florida.

2017 (r-So.)

  • A season-ending injury limited him to four games with starts against NC State and at Wake Forest
  • Logged crucial playing time at wide receiver and on special teams
  • Opened the season against No.1 Alabama with a 21-yard reception
  • Followed with a career day in a start vs. NC State, tallying a career-best 85 yards on three receptions, including a career-long 60-yard catch from quarterback James Blackman.

  • Played wide receiver, defensive end and safety for coach Bob Hudson at East Lake High in Tarpon Springs, Florida
  • Finished with 62 receptions for 880 yards and 12 touchdown receptions and led East Lake to the state playoffs as a senior
  • Scored 18 touchdowns in 2014, adding three punt return scores, two kick return touchdowns and a rushing score
  • Named to the 2014 American Family Insurance All-USA Football Second Team and the All-Florida Football First Team
  • 2014 Florida All-State Class 7A First Team selection
  • Five-star recruit and the seventh-best player in the nation in the 2015 class according to ESPN
  • Held a four-star grade from 247Sports and was rated the nation’s No. 4 wide receiver and the 35th-best player in the country
  • Rated a five-star recruit and the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 26 player in the nation from Rivals
  • Ranked the No. 6 wide receiver and the No. 34 overall prospect in the nation by Scout
  • Ranked the No. 1 “athlete” in the country and the third-best prospect in Florida by ESPN
  • Starred for Team Highlight in the 2015 Under Armour All-America Game, totaling two receptions for 68 yards, including a 60-yard catch, to help his squad to a 46-6 victory
  • Selected Florida State over offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Alabama among others
