At his introductory press conference Thursday, new WVU head coach Neal Brown announced the first of presumably several personnel changes within his coaching staff.

Vic Koenning, the defensive coordinator under Brown at Troy, will take over the same position at WVU.

“Vic has a history of putting together some of the top attacking defenses in the country,” said Brown. “He was a huge part of our success at Troy, he has experience in this league, and I cannot be more excited to have him.”

Koenning has spent the last four years as Troy’s defensive coordinator. He also coached the Trojans from 2003-04, and spent one season under Bill Snyder at Kansas State.

But Brown’s first official staff hire spells the end of Tony Gibson’s second stint at West Virginia.

Gibson has been WVU’s defensive coordinator since 2014. He also served as an assistant under Rich Rodriguez from 2001-07 and under Dana Holgorsen in 2013.

Athletic director Shane Lyons confirmed Thursday that Gibson will no longer coach at WVU, and that the 23-year assistant still wants to coach.
