Mountaineers in the NFL: Week 1 Report

WVU Football

Week 1 of the NFL season is in the books. Football is officially in full swing. The Mountaineers are 2-0 and the many Mountaineers in the NFL saw their first taste of action this past weekend. Let’s highlight some of those Mountaineers who made a big impact on their respective teams the first week of the NFL season.

Bruce Irvin (LB, Oakland Raiders)

Irvin is now one of the captains of the Raiders defense under new head coach Jon Gruden. He had a forced fumble strip sack in the second quarter on Rams quarterback Jared Goff, but the Raiders lost 33-13.

Kyzir White  (LB, L.A. Chargers)

White is starting off the transition from safety, where he played under Tony Gibson at WVU, to outside linebacker for the Los Angeles Chargers. White had six tackles and received significant playing time Sunday, even though he was listed as second on the depth chart for the Chargers at ROLB.

The Chargers lost to the Chiefs, 38-28.

Adam “Pacman” Jones (CB, Denver Broncos)

It was a big day for the 12-year vet as he suited up for his new team. Jones forced two stops and was tasked to be the main cover man for the Broncos with the departure of Aquib Talib.

Jones allowed Denver to secure a 27-24 win over Seattle with an interception on the Seahawks’ final drive.

Nick Kwiatkowski (LB, Chicago Bears)

Kwiatkowski played in Chicago’s season opener alongside Khalil Mack, one of the highest profile offseason acquisitions anywhere in the NFL. The Bears defense limited to Packers to under 100 yards rushing, and Kwiatkowski had four tackles. But Green Bay secured a 24-23 win after a 21-point fourth quarter.

Rasul Douglas (CB, Philadelphia Eagles)

Douglas made one of the biggest plays of the opening game for the Eagles as he picked off Matt Ryan’s pass to Julio Jones in the fourth quarter. The Eagles were leading by four at that point and scored on the next drive to pull away, ultimately beating Atlanta 18-12.

The second-year defensive back also intercepted a pass in the Eagles’ opener last season.
