WVU football announces incoming transfer

West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown has announced that John Hughes, a 6-4, 305-pound, sophomore offensive lineman from Carrollton, Texas, has signed a grant-in-aid and will transfer to WVU from Navarro College. Hughes will have three years of eligibility remaining to play during a four-year period.

  • Played in 11 games for coach Jim Gush at Navarro College
  • Member of Navarro squad that advanced to the Southwest Junior College Football Conference semifinals and an appearance in the Salt City Bowl
  • Helped pave the way for Navarro to average 307.0 passing yards (No. 1 in the nation), 464.4 yards per game (No. 4) 33.6 points per game (No. 12) and 157.4 yards rushing (No. 33)
  • Part of offense that finished with 28 passing touchdowns (No. 4 in the nation), 19 rushing touchdowns (No. 25), 235 first downs (No. 4), 95 rushing first downs (No. 13) and 128 passing first downs (No. 1)
  • Also offered by Florida State and Houston

High School

  • Played for coach Jay Cline at Creekview High
  • Used at tackle and guard
  • Two-time All-District 14-5A First-Team honors
  • Helped lead Creekview to an 8-3 overall record, an 11-5A district title and spot in the state playoffs as a sophomore


  • Son of Bill and Sandy Hughes
  • Father played football at Maryland and earned invitation to the Detroit Lions training camp
